WHAT'S NEXT?

My whole life, I have heard the term “wait on the Lord.”

I have heard the verse in Isaiah 40:31 time and time again, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
And in Psalms 27:14, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and courageous. Wait for the Lord.”

I know what it means to wait on the Lord. I feel like I’ve mastered the subject of waiting on the Lord. I have waited on the Lord to bring me the right man to marry. I have waited on the Lord to help me decide what to study in college. I have waited on the Lord to confirm my feelings that my husband and I should move to Colorado. I always knew the general end result about what I was waiting for.

But what happens when the outcome doesn’t go our way after all the waiting? I’ve felt this within the last 72 hours. I spent weeks praying for something. I had humbled myself before the Lord time after time. I had grand plans in my mind of how it was all going to play out. I felt that I knew that this was God’s purpose for this stage of my life.

And then it all fell through.

I was hurt.

I wept.

And I let myself be in a funk for 24 hours.

Once the 24 hour mark hit, it was time for me to get over myself.

My home is nestled along the foothills in Colorado. From where I look at the Rocky Mountains, I can only see a few. If I didn’t know any better, those would be the only ones I knew existed along this grand mountain range. But if I leave my comfort zone, and drive just 30 minutes east and look back, I can see how many other mountains exist.

Isn’t that like our life? From where we sit, in our own comfort zone, we can only see a few possibilities for how our lives could play out. But, if we push ourselves out of our home base, and let God take us somewhere new; our minds are open to so many more options.

Listen to me, it’s okay to be upset if life throws you a curve ball. But it’s not okay to camp there. You have to know, in the pit of your soul, that the Lord will remain faithful to you.

God has made us this sweet promise that we can hold onto during those times when we are looking up at the foothills and don’t think any other mountains exist: “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

A crisis in your life will not derail our sovereign God. He knows the plans He has for you. When you are left wondering, “What’s next?” do not lose hope. There are mountains that you can’t see yet, but God can.
