I go through phases a lot. Now these aren’t always pronounced phases that are hugely noticeable to those around me, such as if I changed the color of my hair from brown to purple to blonde, but they are still marked by change. For example, during the first few months of 2016 I ordered tea every time I went to Starbucks, but now I’m back to ordering coffee every time. Sometimes I’ll get on a Pilates kick for a few weeks, but right now I’m hitting the cardio machines at the gym. I’m guessing you experience similar changes in preferences in your own life, whether they’re bigger or smaller than my examples. Shifting out of the school year and into summer, my daily activities and preferences are changing a lot, so that’s had me thinking about something that I’d like to share with you girls. Regardless of where we are in life and what we’re doing, we are called on to glorify God through it all. “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 I think it’s easier to remember this verse during monumental moments and even during hard seasons of life. However, its truth persists even in our typical everyday routines. Whether I’m drinking tea or coffee, I am to honor God. Whether I’m staying up late doing homework, or sleeping in and spending my day with my nose in a good book, God commands me to bring glory to Him through it. As we experience changes in routine or preference, we must make sure our focus does not shift off of God’s glory. In my transition to summer, I have to intentionally think about how to glorify God through my free time. Be careful that you don’t fall into the trap of thinking this verse is commanding you to do nothing from the time you wake up until you go to sleep except for reading your Bible and praying. The message of this verse is far from that! What it’s telling us is that whether we’re with friends, alone, reading, watching a movie, or shopping, we are to do that activity in such a way that God is honored. When we’re with friends that can look like having conversations about topics that please God, and encouraging each other. Or it may look like you reading a book or watching a movie that does not contain inappropriate content and language. It may look like you shopping for modest clothing and being kind and encouraging to the employees in the stores you are in. Girls, whatever you are doing, think about how that activity can be done in a way to bring glory to God! And just a tip, if you can’t think of a way to glorify God with a specific activity, it may be an activity you should stay away from altogether. I encourage you to try to make 1 Corinthians 10:31 something you think about throughout the day. In my own life, I notice my whole attitude is better on the days my mindset is focused on glorifying God! Write this verse down and stick it on your mirror, in your car, your journal, or somewhere else you’ll see it often! Written by: Emily
